The Leaving Bees
for Bienenstock Thee Zeitschrift
you could see from here: the Frank Lloyd Wright of the bee architects:
had been working hard: had created a new platform: and you wondered if this
was evolution: already efficient by design: had they kicked it into overdrive:
as if the threat to their species was an alarm: a siren: or maybe this is the bee
haven: the retreat in the mountain woods: the bee citadel: have they escaped us:
what if in their quantum language: they heard Einstein’s words: but left instead
of waiting to die
Stable-Library of the Clone Shepherd
for Lindsay Wilson
Shepherd, you come forward: in speckled egg light: you first think of old
snow drifts: of larvae to some atomic-aged insect: you believe you can just
call her on the fleece-lined phone: the flock have already told you
they are not your furniture: it’s always about ewe, isn’t it?:
but all eyes are watching from anxious corners: would you disturb her counting?
—just to hear her voice talking to you: are they safe here in the library:
you heard the wolves last night: little book-burners dancing around their bonfire:
the songbook falls open to “Hello Dolly”: you can’t see it: but instinct says
she’s got muck boots on: she’s watching the flock too: but they think
they’ve been watching over her: lock the door: lower the light: huddle: everyone
will watch over every one through the night
